Installing a basketball court and wondering what other games you might want to use it for? Tennis is always a popular choice, of course, but have you considered pickleball, too? If you’re just discovering the sport, you’re in for a treat!
What is Pickleball?
The origin of the sport dates back to 1965, when 3 dads Joel Pritchard, Bill Bell, and Barney McCallum, put their heads together to create a game to relieve their kids from the typical summertime boredom. They combined a few commonly known sports to create something new and unique that became known as pickleball.
Pickleball: Picking Up Steam
Pickleball has been gaining in popularity because it’s fun and easy to learn for beginners, but can quickly become fast-paced and competitive for more experienced players. It’s become a staple in many schools, recreation centers, and even retirement communities, due to its universal appeal. Many also like the game because it’s played on a smaller court and at a slower pace than tennis.
So, in a nutshell, pickleball is:
- A combination of elements from tennis, badminton and ping-pong
- Played on a badminton-sized court (indoors or out) with a modified tennis net
- Played with paddles and a plastic ball
- A super fun sport for everyone!
