What is Pickleball?

The origin of the sport dates back to 1965, when 3 dads Joel Pritchard, Bill Bell, and Barney McCallum, put their heads together to create a game to relieve their kids from the typical summertime boredom. They combined a few commonly known sports to create something new and unique that became known as pickleball.

Pickleball is a combination of ping pong and tennis played on a court similar to badminton. This net game is designed to be played indoors or out, one on one or two on two. Players use either a wood or composite paddle to hit a ball similar to a wiffle ball) back and forth to score points. The game is scored like tennis, but with a few minor court modifications.

Pickleball: Picking Up Steam

Pickleball has been gaining in popularity because it’s fun and easy to learn for beginners, but can quickly become fast-paced and competitive for more experienced players. It’s become a staple in many schools, recreation centers, and even retirement communities, due to its universal appeal. Many also like the game because it’s played on a smaller court and at a slower pace than tennis.

So, in a nutshell, pickleball is:

  • A combination of elements from tennis, badminton and ping-pong
  • Played on a badminton-sized court (indoors or out) with a modified tennis net
  • Played with paddles and a plastic ball
  • A super fun sport for everyone!
