Owning a hot tub is a great way improve your physical and mental health, strengthen relationships, and just relax. And while hot tubs are generally low maintenance, it is important to keep them in tip-top shape to ensure optimal enjoyment. The cover for your hot tub is important because it keeps heat in and debris out. If your cover is damaged, it could result in a dramatic increase in operation cost, or worse, injury to those using the hot tub. If you notice any of the following issues, it is time to replace your hot tub cover:
1) Torn, cracked, or brittle outer vinyl
2) Damaged straps or locks
3) Sagging or bowed core (you may notice “puddling” in the center or an unusually heavy cover that has retained water)
4) Torn hinge (6″ or more can lead to critical heat loss)
5) Musty or moldy smell
When it’s time to replace the cover, you’ll need to measure your hot tub’s length, width, and radius corner to ensure you receive the correct size. This is easily accomplished by following these steps.
Step 1: Measure the Length
Here we are measuring the length of our tub. Measure from an area on the tub that is a straight edge to a straight edge on the other side of the tub. You do not want to measure from an area near the corners that is rounded.
It is always better to add ½” to the measurement you get on the length AND the width.
In this particular measurement the tape is at about 107”. You will want to add a ½” to be safe making the measurement 107.5”.
Step 2: Measure the Width
In this image it shows that the width is approximately 90”. To be safe always add a ½”, determining that the width of this cover should be 90.5”.
Step 3: Measure the Radius Corner
The radius is the rounded portion of the tub corner. When you measure the radius corner, you are measuring how much of the corner is actually rounded. This measurement can be done with any straight edge and a measuring tool (e.g. tape measure/ruler). Place the straight edged item you have chosen against the edge of one side of the tub. Make sure the straight edge item is extended past the edge of the tub. Next, take the tape measure and place the start of the tape/ruler to the outer most edge of the straight edge. Look where the curve/ rounded edge on the corner begins to be straight and look at where this point meets your tape measure. This is the radius edge. We have demonstrated this process in the image below.
Finally: This hot tub will need a cover that is 107.5”x 90.5” with a radius corner of 4.5”
